I stand with Planned Parenthood because as the nations leading sexual and reproductive heath care provider and advocate they offer medically accurate information on sexual and reproductive heath, as well as provide quality health care to millions of women...and men. Many of the people they serve are those that cannot afford or do not qualify for health insurance. They provide life saving pap-smears to women, many of whom do not have insurance and/money. Planned Parenthood provides facts and accurate information on how to protect ourselves from sexually transmitted diseases/infections, and on the prevention of unwanted pregnancy...instead of preaching abstinence and leaving individuals in ignorance about how to protect themselves.
Planned Parenthood supports my right to choose whether or not I want to be a mother. They provide informed choices and an environment that is free of judgment when a woman is forced to make one of the hardest decisions that she will ever face. Planned Parenthood offers contraception, testing for STDs, and cancer screening. Abortion only counts for 3% of their services and that legal and personal medical procedure is NOT paid for with government funds.
They help prevent countless unwanted pregnancies, which allows many women to live their lives or leave bad situations or rise above their current circumstances. An unwanted pregnancy can alter a woman's entire life. If she doesn't have a support system she may have to drop out of school and be forced to raise that child in poverty, and god FORBID she ask for any kind of assistance from the government or pious hypocrites while she tries to raise that child. A woman in an abusive relationship is at even more risk for abuse when she becomes pregnant. In fact, one of the main causes of death for pregnant women is being murdered by their unborn child's father. Not everyone wants to have a child or be a mother. Planned Parenthood provides me with that choice, whether it be by offering contraception, information or termination.
Without Planned Parenthood many women would go without proper health care. What does that mean for those women? That means less cases of breast cancer found in time to do something about it. Less women having access to yearly pap-smears, which could mean for many women, myself included, not catching abnormal cell growth on the cervix in enough time to halt it's progress. It means more women die of preventable and treatable illnesses because they no longer have access to the health care that Planned Parenthood provides.
It's becoming very clear that our government cares very little at all for the women of our country. It seems as if we are merely second-class citizens in their eyes. What else am I to believe when I read that House Republicans, and a few Democrats, proposed banning federal funds for abortions to those who had been raped unless the rape was "forceful", which would have then proceeded to legally redefine what constituted as rape?...or about the Georgia lawmaker who just proposed a law that would make miscarriages illegal under certain circumstances? MISCARRIAGES! And then there are several states (Iowa, Nebraska, Virginia, Kansas and Pennsylvania) that are proposing laws that would allow deadly force to be used to protect a fetus! All of this screams at me, "To hell with the health and well-being of the women/mothers of our country".
I stand with Planned Parenthood because Planned Parenthood stands with women.
